3 Tips to avoid those extra Xmas Kilos!

Christmas is such a challenging time to stick to your goals. With so much temptation around I admit it can seem impossible to stay on track during this time of year.

Luckily it does not have to be this way. You don’t have to temporarily give up on your goals to start them again in the new year.

I’m not suggesting that you can’t indulge a little or that you can’t attend any parties or social events during this time. However, there are three simple things that you can do to minimize the effects of the silly season on your waistline.

  1. Know what the food options are going to be in advance.

If you predict that the food options where you are headed are not going to fit in with your goals, plan ahead to bring your own healthy dish to share (like - my Summer Satay Slaw ) or eat before you go. I have attached my Food ‘Swap Guide’ for you to use where possible. This will allow you to make the best choices available.

  1. Choose your Alcohol wisely
Obviously completely cutting alcohol out of the equation these holidays is the best choice but if you are likely to have a drink or two around Christmas time, choosing the right type of drink can make a big difference.
For people with weight loss goals, my drink recommendations in order of preference are as follows;
  1. Spirit and Soda Water/Water (standard size 30ml shot)
  2. Standard size glass of Red wine
  3. Low alcohol and/or low carb beer.
Choose low alcohol options in any drink, completely avoiding sugary soft drinks. Remember to have big glasses of water in between drinks to stay hydrated.    

  1. Take time out for yourself
This time of year can be crazy busy and also crazy stressful. Sometimes we need to slow down in order to be able to speed up. It might seem impossible to squeeze in a workout or time for yourself during this busy period but I promise it will be so worth it.
Whether it is yoga, a walk/run, a swim at the beach, a workout, a stretch session or a meditation your body and mind will be buzzing and energized to get on with whatever life is throwing at you.

Just making a few small choices like the ones above can help you stay on track with your goals yet allow you to still relax and have fun.
